Food Therapy

What is food therapy?

Food Therapy is the practice of using food as a tool to support your pet's health and treat illness. It includes choosing ingredients and diets that match your pet's specific needs, age, lifestyle and health condition. This approach is guided by Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) or integrative veterinary care, combining ancient wisdom with modern science.

Who can benefit from food therapy?

Almost any pet can benefit from food therapy! Food therapy can be preventitive, supportive or corrective, depending on your pet's unique health profile. It can especially be useful for senior pets to support aging gracefully, pets with chronic conditions or sensitivities, animals recovering from illness, overweight or underweight pets, and pets with behavioral or mood changes.

What are common conditions that may benefit from food therapy?

  • Allergies or chronic skin issues
  • Degenerative joint disease (DJD) or arthritis (OA) (along with other modalities)
  • Digestive issues
  • Cancer support
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Anxiety or behavioral problems
  • Obesity
  • Many more!

How is the diet developed for my pet?

At the ART of Healing, a licensed veterinarian who is certified in food therapy will perform a thorough evaluation of your pet's condition, taking into account their medical history and your treatment goals. Based on this assessment, a personalized diet will be created to address your pet's specific needs.

What is involved in the consultation?

Your pet's consultation will include, but is not limited to, a routine physical examination, further discussion of goals for your pets, and guidance on how to cook for your pet at home. Further diagnostic tests may be recommended if abnormalities are noted in the routine physical exam. After the consultation, a diet will be created for your pet and emailed to you within 7 days from the initial consultation.

How often would I need to adjust my pet's diet?

The diet change always varies with each case. Recheck examinations are recommended approximately 1 month after starting any new diet to ensure caloric needs are met and that the diet is performing as desired. Once stability is established, examinations every 6 months are recommended.

How do I schedule?

Please call us at (262) 363-4557 to schedule a consultation. The initial consultation will take about 30 minutes and will develop a diet specific for your pet's needs.

Disclaimer:

Mukwonago Animal Hospital veterinarians that are creating diets are general practitioners certified in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine Food Therapy, not boarded veterinary nutritionists. Diets are formulated and balanced using Balance.it software using both TCVM and Western principles as appropriate. Diets are extensively manipulated to provide an ideal diet for the individual patient while conforming to established nutritional requirements. Diets should NOT be used for any animal other than the patient for which it is created.
